J.J. McCarthy has a new number, and FOX's NFL channel made a joke of it in nine characters: "Now it's 9x2." The quarterback who wore No. 9 at Michigan and in Minnesota is a Giant now, in No. 18. Eight hours after the short went up, it had passed 75,000 views. That puts it on course for about eleven times what a new upload here usually gathers on its first day.
The joke works because 18 already means something to Vikings followers. It is Justin Jefferson's number, and one of the most-liked comments points out that McCarthy cannot seem to get away from his old receiver. Others take the math somewhere else. One suggests 1+8 instead of 9x2, another proposes "nine nine" as a nickname, and a third says the extra nine means he will be twice as good. Jameis Winston, another Giants quarterback, turns up in the jokes too. The channel posted a separate short the next day under the title "Don't count Jameis out."
It went up on a crowded day for the channel. It ran alongside a clip of Patrick Mahomes helping at his son's T-ball game in the rain, and a Gronk & Jules Show episode with Amon-Ra St. Brown. The jersey short drew more than either.
