Oilers-Canucks opener highlights draw sixteen times Sportsnet's usual first day
Under the Edmonton-Vancouver reel, the comments are a long joke about Edmonton's goaltending and a welcome for a new Canuck named Paul Cotter.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 240,698 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (14,914).
NHL Highlights | Canucks vs. Oilers - September 29, 2026
Western Canada showed up. Sportsnet's highlights of the Vancouver Canucks' visit to the Edmonton Oilers on September 29 passed 238,000 views in 23 hours. That is about sixteen times what a new video on the channel usually draws in its first day.
Two days earlier, the talk on this channel was all Toronto: Matthew Knies leaving, Kirill Marchenko arriving, as we reported here. This reel moves the story west, to a matchup with some history. The Oilers beat the Canucks in seven games in the second round of the 2024 playoffs. That run took them to the first of two straight Stanley Cup Finals.
The video is Sportsnet's standard package of goals and saves, with no studio talk. The comments supply the commentary. Viewers marvel at how many goals the opener produced and give Evan Bouchard three of them. They keep coming back to Paul Cotter, whom several welcome to Vancouver for a shorthanded goal and the overtime winner. One Canucks supporter calls it the team's own Stanley Cup for the year.
Edmonton's goaltending gets the sharpest wit. Tristan Jarry is the subject of joke after joke, and some viewers bring up the trade that sent Stuart Skinner to Pittsburgh in exchange for him.
The channel did not let the game go after the final whistle. The next day's Real Kyper & Bourne brought in CHED analyst Rob Brown to go over what the episode's description calls the Oilers' disappointing performance to start the season.
