A 993cc Massey Harris V-twin gets its RPM gauge at Red Beard's Garage

The tractor build led four uploads, while a 2003 F-250 got a Big 3 upgrade, quieter doors and a new audio controller.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Red Beard's Garage split its week between two very different machines. The first upload, and by far the most watched, went back to the Massey Harris project, a tractor running a 993cc V-twin, this time to fit an RPM gauge. It passed 16,000 views and is still the channel's busiest video by a distance.

The comment section turned into a small wiring clinic. Viewers debate whether to run the signal to both coils or rely on the gauge's own setting for a twin, offer their own way to splice the wires, and back the switch to a belt drive. One running joke keeps coming back: surely there is a fancier word for an RPM gauge, and several people helpfully supply "tachometer." Another viewer is already wondering what the torque at the wheels will be once the build is done.

The other three uploads stayed with a 2003 Ford F-250: a Big 3 wiring upgrade, sound deadening for the doors, and an audio control system. They drew smaller crowds, with the door job moving best of the three. Behind them, a nine-day-old guide to opening a 125cc tamper-proof carb keeps finding readers of its own.

Overall the channel ran slower than its usual pace, adding about 1,000 subscribers to reach 478,000. Among the DIY and building channels near its size, HomeTransform and Stick welder had the big weeks, while Lifehacker was quieter still. For Red Beard's Garage, the tractor remains the project people tune in for.

What viewers say

  • If only there was a more elegent name for an RPM gauge...

  • Switching to belt is a good descision
  • Very well done sir. Someone mentioned going to both coils but I believe the tach has a “half fire” selector in order to display the correct rpm. If he went to both the rpm shown would be doubled if on the two cyl selection.

  • I wonder what the foot pound torque at the wheels is going to be on this setup when it's done

  • Should have stripped and ran both wires into a new spade connector but that’s just me.
