Avi Shlaim brings Britain's Palestine legacy to PoliticsJOE

The Oxford historian's extended analysis was the most watched of thirteen uploads spanning Westminster, US politics and a new generational debate.

  5. 40:10He identifies youth activism and civil society campaigns as drivers of political change.

History drew the largest audience. PoliticsJOE's most-watched new upload, ": Benjamin Netanyahu has changed Israel forever", reached roughly 220,000 views, with a sustained argument about Britain's responsibility for Palestine at its centre.

Shlaim, Oxford's emeritus professor of international relations, traces that argument through the Balfour Declaration and British rule. He also recounts his own journey from Baghdad to Israel and Britain, and from military service to opposition to Zionism. His proposed political answer is explicit: he argues that a two-state solution is no longer viable and advocates one democratic state with equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians.

The week's freshest momentum comes from a different setting. Highlights of Louise Haigh deputising for Andy Burnham at parliamentary questions are currently drawing the most daily views of any PoliticsJOE upload. A discussion with Scott Lucas examining Tucker Carlson's claims about Trump's intentions towards Iran is also gathering attention, alongside Ava and Seán's analysis of Abdul El-Sayed's Michigan victory.

Across the channel, daily viewing is about half as high again as usual, while subscribers grew modestly over the week. Among nearby political channels, John Anderson Media drew a very similar weekly audience; The Rest Is Politics is having a particularly pronounced jump in daily viewing.

There was a format debut, too. "Every Generation Debates the Rise of the Far-Right" introduces Generational, bringing five British participants together to consider Reform UK, mainstream parties' responsibilities and whether Trump's unpopularity offers a warning to the global right. Alongside the historian's extended account, it gives PoliticsJOE another way to put political arguments in front of an audience: several generations answering the same questions.
