Shrek 2's button-mashing co-op is back, and viewers spot a GTA VI wink

Aspyr's remaster of the 2004 movie game opens with a familiar-looking logo reveal, then sends the gang from the swamp to Far Far Away.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,173,518 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (64,806).

"THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER," the screen announces. Then glowing green outlines assemble into an ogre-eared "2," and the title card confirms what many viewers first took for a meme: DreamWorks Shrek 2 Remastered is coming to PS5.

The opening is the part everyone talks about. Several of the most liked comments read the slow logo build as a nod to the Grand Theft Auto VI trailers, and others joke that Shrek's swamp beat Vice City to release. The comments came in nearly nine times faster than a usual PlayStation Short collects in a whole first day, and the trailer neared 700,000 views within ten hours.

What follows is under a minute of footage, set to a licensed pop song with no dialogue. Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and the Gingerbread Man explore forests, man a turret, solve platforming puzzles and fight pumpkin monsters, and Fiona gets a rhythm mini-game of her own. The description promises the original's formula: play alone or with up to three friends, and smash, throw and kick your way through the fairytale kingdom.

The original came out in 2004, the same year as the film, on PlayStation 2 among other consoles. Aspyr, the studio behind the remaster, is known for reviving older games.

Many commenters say they played it as children, and a good number ask for a disc edition, with one already imagining the art printed on it.

Anyone judging the visual upgrade should note one line on screen: the footage was captured on PC, some camera angles were adjusted, and not every image appears in the game.

It was not the channel's only fairytale remaster that day. The Wolf Among Us Remastered, Telltale's 2013 noir about Bigby Wolf, also got a story trailer, so the Big Bad Wolf turns up in both.
