Sophia Bush was supposed to be a heart surgeon. She tells Alex Cooper she wanted to study science and only reached a stage because her high school required theater. A pilot for ABC that never got picked up came next, and the people behind it asked her to audition for a show then called Ravens. It became One Tree Hill.
She left USC as a 21-year-old junior to move to North Carolina for it. "I turned 21 the week before I moved to North Carolina," she says, and the young cast bonded so fast that "it literally felt like summer camp." Brooke Davis, the role many viewers still name her by, was first written to be comic relief, someone to "come in and stir the pot," before her part grew. Bush also recalls resisting how sexualized the character was meant to be.
The occasion is her first book, and she makes it sound like hard labor: "'Baptism by fire' is like mellow compared to writing your first book." Its chapters reach the parts of One Tree Hill that were not fun. Bush describes the women in the cast closing ranks to look out for newcomers, and then organizing their joint open letter in 2017. "This is why we say believe women," she says.
The second hour turns to her first marriage and the day of the wedding, when she says she noticed warning signs and set her intuition aside while her mother was ill. Her distinction now: "Marriage is hard, but if hard is suffering, that's not the same thing." The description promises she also talks about coming out and finally feeling like herself. The episode carries several paid sponsor breaks.
The interview drew about 435,000 views in its first 19 hours, while a usual first day for the channel's long videos is a few thousand. In the comments, One Tree Hill fans say they have waited years for this one, and several are already putting in requests for Hilarie Burton next.
