Natalie Merchant recorded her Paste session in late June, at Studio 9 in North Adams, Massachusetts, while Wilco's Solid Sound Festival was going on around her. Three months later it is the video carrying the channel. A week after going up it has passed 64,000 views, and it is still gathering them several times faster than anything else Paste posted.

The set is short and well chosen: "Motherland," the title song of her 2001 album, then "Big Girls" and "Lulu." The comment section is mostly about time. People remember first seeing her with 10,000 Maniacs when they were still a local band, or on MTV in the early nineties, and several note that her voice seems to have deepened with the years. One viewer thanks Paste for a recording of her at this quality, saying such recordings are hard to find.

A short of "Motherland" followed on Friday. On the same day came a full session from The Brothers Comatose, the San Francisco string band, running through "High Hoping," "Feels Like the Devil" and "Black Light Moon," with a banjo short of the opener beside it.

The channel as a whole ran cooler than usual and added about a thousand subscribers. Among the music labels and music media channels with weekly view totals, Paste still gained the most views, about 1.7 million, only a hair ahead of MarvelMusicVEVO. Riot Games Music was close behind.

What viewers say

  • Some singers' voices get even better with age and that is what we have here, jesus

  • It feels like only yesterday that I was completely captivated by her music on MTV in 1993—she was dressed in black with that short haircut. It’s a little bittersweet to realize that both she and I have gotten older, but her voice still moves me deeply and resonates with the same emotion it always has.
  • It is really difficult to find recordings of such quality of Natalie. Thank you Paste.
