An F.B.I. hack, Meta's Muse and Nate Cohn's red-state polls for Times podcasts
Fourteen episodes went up, from cybersecurity reporter Dustin Volz on stolen bureau records to Stewart Mandel on Washington's push to rein in college sports.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Inside the Devastating Hack of the F.B.I.
What did the Times podcast audience come for? Mostly a break-in. "Inside the Devastating Hack of the F.B.I." became the most watched of the week's fourteen uploads. In it, cybersecurity reporter Dustin Volz walks through the attack, the group behind it and what could become of the stolen personnel records. The description frames it as a promise broken: a decade after hackers took millions of federal workers' files, officials said it would never happen again. Several viewers remember exactly that earlier breach, and a few write that they worked on it.
The newer episodes are moving faster. Nate Cohn, the Times's chief political analyst, explains new polls showing Democrats doing well in Republican-leaning Senate states and less well in blue ones, and that episode passed 85,000 views in its first day. Then came "Call My A.I. Agent," with reporter Eli Tan handing his day-to-day life to Muse, Meta's new agent, and it is the channel's quickest video right now.
The whole channel ran at well over twice its usual daily pace, and about 5,000 new subscribers arrived. Among news channels of a similar size it sits mid-table this week. The Financial Express is having an enormous stretch, while WSJ News and The Free Press are quieter than usual.
The lightest corner was college sports: Stewart Mandel of The Athletic on why Congress wants to tidy up a marketplace where players chase paydays from team to team.
