NPR Music reaches 13.2 million as Fat Joe brings company
A sharp subscriber jump lands between Jungle's continuous-groove set and a Fat Joe concert featuring Remy Ma, Jadakiss and more.
Why this story? The channel is adding 100,099 subscribers a day, 92 times a normal day (1,094).
Fat Joe: Tiny Desk Concert
Fat Joe has brought a guest list to the Tiny Desk, and NPR Music has added roughly 100,000 subscribers in a day. The jump is far beyond the channel's usual pace, even as daily views sit only modestly above normal. It isn't clear what prompted the sudden increase in subscribers.
The music arriving around it offers two very different kinds of gathering. In "Fat Joe: Tiny Desk Concert," the Bronx rapper returns after his earlier home edition with Remy Ma, Jadakiss, Stove God Cooks, Stevie Mackey and Dre among the vocal lineup. The set moves through "Lean Back" and "All the Way Up" alongside material from Organized Rhyme. A live band and DJ Ted Smooth support a performance that NPR producer Bobby Carter describes as deliberately spontaneous.
Jungle's concert, posted earlier in the week, has reached about two million views. Tom McFarland, Josh Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto lead a set built to keep moving, with songs flowing into one another rather than stopping for a reset.
That approach connects "Beat 54 (All Good Now)" to "Dominoes," makes room for six-part harmonies on "Keep Me Satisfied," and finishes with a slower-burning version of "Back on 74." Fat Joe fills the desk with guests; Jungle keeps the groove unbroken.
