What comes after playing Lord Rama? For Ranbir Kapoor, the answer may involve stepping behind the camera to make a feel-good family drama.
Speaking to Haroon Rashid alongside Ramayana co-star Sai Pallavi, Kapoor reveals that he started writing a script a few months ago. He cites Life Is Beautiful and Rajkumar Hirani's films as the kind of territory he wants to explore, and says he hopes to begin shooting his directorial debut within two or three years.
That is an ambition, not a retirement announcement. Reflecting on his packed slate, Kapoor suggests this could be his last decade playing these sorts of leading roles. The distinction matters: he is imagining a change in his work, not announcing an exit from films.
The interview drew around 38,000 views in its first ten hours, already far beyond BBC Asian Network's usual full-day audience for comparable uploads. There is plenty beyond the career revelation, too.
Pallavi recalls Kapoor's calming support during her first Hindi takes. Both describe the challenge of playing revered figures without making them emotionally remote: their way into Rama and Sita was through human vulnerability, rather than an air of divine distance.
Kapoor says the role also prompted him to think about how he treats people away from the set. "What makes you a better person is how you treat people, how kind you are," he tells Rashid.
Viewers are already suggesting another pairing for the actors, this time in a mature love story. Pallavi, meanwhile, offers a quieter glimpse of life outside the spectacle: reading, gardening and a creative working environment help keep her grounded.
