Posters invoking Ram and Krishna have turned a religious controversy into a political argument in Lucknow, with rival messages looking ahead to Uttar Pradesh's 2027 election.
India's Hindi-language news channel NDTV India, part of New Delhi Television, places Dhirendra Krishna Shastri prominently in its latest-news broadcast. The preacher, also known as Baba Bageshwar, is associated with Bageshwar Dham, a Hindu temple in Madhya Pradesh.
The broadcaster's accompanying coverage describes posters appearing after Shastri made a comparison involving Ram and Krishna. A Samajwadi Party poster declared that Krishna would arrive in 2027. A BJP response said those who brought Ram would also bring Krishna in 2027. The competing slogans give a religious reference an explicitly electoral meaning.
According to the broadcaster, Shastri said he had not intended an insult and offered an apology if people's sentiments had been hurt. Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, called for permission to be withheld from forthcoming religious storytelling events associated with him.
Other organizers, including politician Raja Bhaiya, announced gatherings in places including Kunda, the channel reports. Crucially, its accompanying report distinguishes demands for bans or restrictions from an actual government order: a call to stop an event is not confirmation that it has been prohibited.
