Do you need a giant AI model? Microsoft Developer runs the test
Among fifteen uploads, the Azure SQL team also showed vector search across a billion rows returning in milliseconds.

Am I paying for a giant model I don't need?
Microsoft Developer put out fifteen uploads over the week. The most watched asks a question many teams paying for AI have probably asked themselves: "Am I paying for a giant model I don't need?" In under four minutes it runs Model Router, which sends each request to a model that suits the task, against a baseline like GPT-5. The open-source evaluation toolkit then produces a dashboard comparing quality, cost and speed. In the comments, one viewer agrees that routing simple questions to smaller models is where the savings are, and wants accuracy figures from real production workloads. Another asks for a version inside Visual Studio 2026.
The Data Exposed episode is a story about customers asking for more. Each new request is followed by an answer, from DiskANN, a graph-based index, to filtering and live updates. It ends with a billion-row search that still returns in milliseconds.
Several other uploads share a flight theme, from "Expanding Your Airspace" to a keynote called "From Copilot to Flight Captain." The newest, a short teaser for an October 8 webinar on Copilot Studio, is gathering views fastest. Daily views sit well below the channel's usual level. Even so, among similar technology channels only Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Copilot added more views over the week.

What viewers say
The model router section is the practical takeaway. Routing simple queries to smaller models is where the real savings come from, not swapping vendors. Would love to see accuracy numbers on real production workloads though.
