Video taking off 25x its usual first day

'Some people play TOO much': MaxPreps viewers call it good coverage

The football short's title sounds like a complaint about the defender, but the most liked replies say he was only doing his job.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 404,321 views a day, 25 times a normal first day on this channel (16,174).

Viewers disagree with the caption. MaxPreps posted the short on October 2 under a title that reads like an eye-roll, "Some people play TOO much 😭", and the people watching it mostly took the other side. Eleven hours in, it had passed a quarter of a million views, many times what a new short on the channel usually gathers in a whole first day.

The clip is credited to the account woodywommack. Its tags point to IMG Academy, the Bradenton, Florida, boarding school known for stacking its football roster with top recruits, and to wide receivers. The title does not say who is on the field, and one viewer asked whether the player in question is from IMG or the other school.

The argument in the comments is about the defender. The most liked replies praise the defensive back's coverage and instincts, and the top one makes a simple point: he did what he was supposed to do. Another viewer wonders whether the clip was meant as a highlight for the receiver at all, since by that reading the receiver came off second best. One reaches for an NFL comparison, matching the receiver's fake to Jaxon Smith-Njigba's. For a short only half a day old, the comment section is already several times busier than a usual first day.

This is the third day running that a MaxPreps short has run far past the channel's normal start, after "Wait till coach finds out 😰", as we reported here. It was not the only one this time either: a basketball clip posted the same day, "They still got 20 seconds 👀", also ran well ahead, with a smaller crowd. The channel that calls itself America's source for high school sports since 2002 still posts full Game of the Week highlights, like Baylor's 49-7 win over McCallie, but lately it is the short clips credited to other accounts that are drawing the crowds.
