Video taking off 43x its usual first day

Is Brock Purdy the NFL's best QB? First Take's panel splits, and so do the comments

Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears take the question nearly eleven minutes into the segment, and much of the reply section is aimed at Spears.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 204,350 views a day, 43 times a normal first day on this channel (4,786).

The question in the title doesn't arrive until almost eleven minutes in. Before it, Shae Cornette, Stephen A. Smith, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears work through the injuries to Puka Nacua and DeVonta Smith, then argue whether the Eagles should worry more about their offense or their defense. Still, it is the Purdy debate that sells the clip. In twelve hours it reached about 142,000 views, on a channel where a new video usually ends its whole first day under 5,000.

The real argument continues below the video, where comments came in more than twelve times faster than on a usual first day. Much of it is aimed at Spears. According to commenters, he credited San Francisco's supporting cast, naming George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey and coach Kyle Shanahan, and leaned toward Josh Allen. Orlovsky, they say, argued that Purdy is in full command of the offense. Viewers answer Spears point by point. Some note that Patrick Mahomes has had Andy Reid as his coach for his whole career. Others bring up Allen's turnovers, or say Purdy is winning without his top receivers. Even a self-described Chiefs fan sides with Purdy.

The argument has history behind it. Purdy was the very last pick of the 2022 draft, the player known as Mr. Irrelevant, and several commenters suggest that label still shapes how he is judged.

He was not only a First Take topic. NFL Live's Week 4 predictions gave Purdy's season its own chapter, next to a look at Broncos vs. 49ers, and that video and Fantasy Focus, where Daniel Dopp, Field Yates and Mike Clay weigh Tyler Shough and Darren Waller, are also running well ahead of the channel's usual pace. The busiest of them, though, is the one about the quarterback the league once picked last.

What viewers say

  • As a Chiefs fan, Purdy’s playing the best football of all the QBs right now
  • Brock is the best player on the niners right now and it isn't particularly close. He is BACKPACKING that team. He isn't missing his top 2 receivers, he is missing his top 4 receivers lol

  • The one thing I haven't heard the media say is how little the niners are using CMC this year and still winning games that's going to be huge come playoff time.
