Corn or compute? Maxinomics examines the economics of an acre
Phil Andrews's four-upload week returns to the land, electricity and local costs behind AI data centers.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Corn or data centers?
Maxinomics puts a cornfield and an AI data center on the same patch of imaginary land, then asks what each can earn. In "Corn or data centers?", Phil Andrews moves from farming to cattle to wind turbines before presenting a dramatically larger revenue estimate for AI compute: about $10 million per acre annually.
That is revenue, not a promise of profit for a landowner, and viewers are questioning what the comparison leaves out. Comments ask whether those returns can last, who pays for electricity and water, and whether food and AI belong in the same calculation at all. The clip was the most-watched of four new uploads, reaching roughly 32,000 views.
The other posts give that land-use question different angles: opposition to data centers compared with nuclear plants, an owner reconsidering a sale after learning the proposed use was a prison, and Loudoun County's wealth. The Loudoun upload currently draws the most daily views on the channel.
Behind those shorter arguments sits October's "What They're Not Telling You About Data Centers", which remains among the channel's busiest videos. Its longer investigation follows Northern Virginia's internet infrastructure into questions about cooling water, fragmented electricity grids and who shoulders the cost of new demand.
The audience grew this week, though subscriber growth was slower than over the broader month, and daily viewing is well below its usual level. Among nearby education channels, BBC Timestamp had the largest weekly views gain; Maxinomics had the next largest. For Andrews, the substantial viewing continues to come with a concrete question: what does a lucrative acre actually deliver to its neighbors?
