Rare earth magnets and a Tomahawk's fins keep Maxinomics turning
No new video went up, and a 24-day-old explainer on China's grip on magnet metals has passed six million views.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
China Found Something Better Than Oil
On an ordinary day, Maxinomics draws close to 400,000 views. Right now it is running at under half that, which is what a week without a single new upload tends to look like for a channel built on long, carefully produced explainers.
The video holding things up is "China Found Something Better Than Oil," and the something is magnets. It starts with a copper coil, a battery and a magnet spinning on a table, then follows that quiet rotation into AirPods, the Ford Explorer and the steering fins of Tomahawk missiles. The chapter list moves from Mountain Pass in California to Baotou in Inner Mongolia, from the sale of America's magnet company Magnequench to the separation problem, which the description likens to sorting identical twins. Twenty-four days in, it is still gathering views far faster than anything else on the channel.
Behind it sits "The Building That Broke Airbnb," ten days old and closing in on a million. Its route to the question of Airbnb versus hotel runs through the Equitable Building in Manhattan, the tower whose shadow helped bring about New York's 1916 zoning law, and a new stadium in Nashville partly paid for by hotel taxes. A two-month-old look at why central planning keeps stumbling, from Karl Marx to the ten-year wait for a Trabant in East Berlin, is still drawing a steady crowd.
The subscriber count kept climbing anyway, by about 11,000 over the seven days. Among the explainer and history channels of a similar size, only BBC Timestamp added more views; Fire of Learning and Cogito had calmer weeks with no subscriber change at all. For a channel whose whole motto is "Follow the money," the money this week led to a magnet.
