"I don't want to chase YouTube trends," Domhnall O Luchrain says near the end of Cogito's West Papua documentary. With no new upload this week, that substantial film remains the channel's busiest individual video, having passed a million views.
"Inside the World's Most Hidden Conflict" traces Papuan history, Dutch colonial rule and the agreements that brought the territory under Indonesian control. Grasberg's mineral wealth supplies a central thread, connecting the documentary's historical account to its examination of mining, forest clearance and the independence movement. Archival footage includes West Papua Peoples Front figure Viktor Kasiëpo explaining the distinct communities gathered under the West Papuan name.
The film also gives viewers a glimpse of the person behind the maps and motion graphics. O Luchrain appears on camera towards the end to explain the research involved and his commitment to independent documentary-making. "Every single video I make will be on the internet forever and for free," he says.
Across Cogito, the week brought roughly 347,000 views and continued subscriber growth, although today's channel-wide viewing is well below its usual daily level. Among nearby education channels, BBC Timestamp had a particularly busy week; Cogito's weekly views exceeded those of British Council | English and Learn How to Sign.
Beyond West Papua, the older "Inside Morocco's Secret War for Western Sahara" remains another active part of the archive, followed by the Kashmir documentary "The Most Militarised Place on Earth".
