Puerto Rico's vanishing population keeps Cogito busy between documentaries
A film posted nineteen months ago, on an island that could shrink to a million people by 2100, has passed two million views.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Puerto Rico Is Dying: Here's Why
Nineteen months after it went up, "Puerto Rico Is Dying: Here's Why" is still the film people find first on Cogito. Domhnall O Luchrain's documentary sets the island's beaches and mountains against a harder picture: a population that has lost about 15% of its people since 2006, a birth rate the description puts below Japan's, and electricity bills that are high even when the blackouts last for weeks. It has now passed two million views.
Right behind it is "Inside Morocco's Secret War for Western Sahara," a year old and close to a million. Its subject is the Berm, a sand wall some 2,700 kilometers long that the film describes as ringed by millions of landmines, cutting through a territory Spain once promised a vote on its future. Further back, the spring film on Kashmir keeps a quieter pace.
No new documentary went up, and the channel ran a little under its usual daily pace, with the subscriber count holding at 798,000. Among the explainer and history channels close to its size, it sat in the middle by views gained, while BBC Timestamp and Maxinomics had far busier weeks. For a one-man channel built on maps and motion graphics, that hardly looks like a slowdown.
