Cake, candy and a party: Learn How to Sign's ten birthday signs

Meredith's newest vocabulary set runs from 'celebrate' to 'dessert', and a preview of a conversations course taught by Deaf educator Sarah Martindale went up beside it.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Birthday, celebrate, cake, gift, party, candy: the ten signs in Learn How to Sign's Friday upload read like the guest list for any child's party, and that may be the point. It is the youngest of the channel's three new videos, and already the one gathering views fastest, close to 8,000 in three days.

The two that went up on Wednesday took different roads. "10 Basic ASL Commands" is classroom vocabulary in its plainest form: sit, stand, come, stop, wait, look at me, pay attention. It is the week's most watched upload, and its comments come from a long way off. One viewer writes from a school for deaf learners in Jinja, Uganda, planning to share it with students and noting how many of these signs resemble Ugandan Sign Language. Another says a Deaf college professor recommended the channel, and a younger viewer reports that teachers at a kids' gym show these videos in class.

The third video is a step past single signs. It previews the channel's conversations course, where Deaf ASL educator Sarah Martindale works through turn-taking, eye contact and how to hand a conversation over to someone else.

Around all that, the channel ran a little below its usual daily pace and kept adding subscribers at about a thousand a day, which leaves it at 922,000.

The comments under "🤟 10 Basic ASL Commands"

  • My ASL professor at my college has recommended this channel. He’s deaf, so the fact that he recommends this channel is huge!
  • There are similar signs with Uganda Sign language, like stand, stay, stop, wait , look at attention etc. Happy to be learning the ASL too.
