Maitlis and Sopel take Washington shift in LBC's midterm marathon
Lewis Goodall reports from Texas as an overnight broadcast draws an unusually large audience for LBC's long-form coverage.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 752,384 views a day, 25 times a normal first day on this channel (29,804).
Election Night: Live with the News Agents, Simon Marks and Nick Ferrari
Simon Marks opens the coverage, Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel carry the Washington shift, and Nick Ferrari takes it into breakfast. LBC built its US election-night broadcast around a relay of familiar voices, with Lewis Goodall contributing from Texas.
The stream drew almost 300,000 views in its first six hours, already far beyond the usual first-day audience for the channel's long broadcasts. Its central question was whether Republicans could hold off the Democratic gains suggested by the polls, and what the outcome would mean for Donald Trump's presidency.
Maitlis and Sopel's scheduled overnight stint brought together The News Agents colleagues in Washington, territory Sopel knows from his years as the BBC's North America editor. The running order stretched from late evening in Britain through to Ferrari's morning programme.
Separate clips from the coverage give a flavour of the discussion. Former Trump adviser Bryan Lanza told Maitlis and Sopel that the midterm projections were worse than he had imagined. Elsewhere, a caller named Brian offered Simon Marks a less Washington-centred account of voters' priorities: the prices of chicken, beef and petrol.
The live broadcast was not LBC's only fast-moving election upload. Simon Marks's discussion with James O'Brien about Trump's final pre-midterm speech also drew an unusually large audience, putting the president's campaign rhetoric alongside the overnight count.
