He taught her first. Later, Allan Filgueiras says, his daughter Nathalia became his flight instructor. That reversal is one of the memories he shares at a press conference after her death in a Learjet crash in Florida.
Nathalia, the plane's 20-year-old co-pilot, was among nine people killed when the jet crashed into a roadway in Palm Beach County last week, KTVU reports. The flight was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas.
Her father remembers someone who could hardly believe flying was her job. She told him she would have paid to do it, yet someone was paying her instead. Asked what he would say to her, he answers: "I wanted to be by her side and fly the plane to help her."
KTVU's report drew about 151,000 views in eight hours, an unusually fast start for the station. The family's lawyer says they will address their perspective on the crash when the investigative report is released, while defending Nathalia's training and qualifications.
Alongside his grief, Allan recalls the flights they took together to Key West and Naples, sometimes simply to get coffee. Aviation was not only her work; it was something they shared.
