Video taking off 7.4x its usual first day

"How dare we!": Andra Berghoff answers a man who used Zendaya as his example

Her makeup short drew more comments in eight hours than six of her usual first days put together, and most of them circle back to one photo.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 155,117 views a day, 7.4 times a normal first day on this channel (20,906).

Andra Berghoff put her argument in the title: "Women wearing makeup and living for themselves? How dare we!" The short is a reply to a man's clip, and according to the people writing under it, he made his case that Western women aren't attractive while holding up a picture of Zendaya.

That choice is what most commenters can't get past. The second thing they quote is his claim that women care more about the approval of other women and gay men than about men's. Plenty of them are happy to accept that. Several women write that they have always dressed for their friends, a femme lesbian explains that she wears makeup every day as self-expression, and one viewer brings up Angie Dickinson's old line about dressing for women. A good share of the replies also turn the critique back on the man himself.

The short passed 80,000 views in its first eight hours, on a channel where a new short usually ends its whole first day near 20,000. The comments came in even faster: more than six times as many as one of her shorts usually collects in a full day.

It was not the only fast one. Her short arguing that homeschooling needs "way more rules and regulations," posted the day before, passed 150,000 views in a little over a day. Around both sit two Barbie shorts, one of them titled "This is the bad place," and a complaint that nobody can afford to have kids. It is a fair sample of what the Minnesota creator's about text calls the Womansphere.

What viewers say

  • Also, I'm a femme lesbian. We exist. I wear makeup everyday and I just do it for self expression.

  • I hate to break it to this guy, but we’ve always dressed for other women (our friends), it’s never been for men.
