Godfrey Exposes J Edgar Hoover For Anti Black Comments Despite Being Part Black
Fifteen hours after it went up, a short clip of the comedian Godfrey talking about J. Edgar Hoover had close to 40,000 views. On Willie D's interview channel, a new short usually opens with about a thousand on its whole first day.
The clip is cut from Godfrey's sit-down with Willie D, the Geto Boys rapper who now runs a long-form conversation show. Its title says Godfrey "exposes" Hoover for anti-Black remarks "despite being part Black," a claim about Hoover's ancestry that stays the title's own. In the description, Godfrey points to Hoover's view that Black progress was a threat to the country and asks whether people should wait for one leader to lead them, since such leaders kept being taken down. That echoes a real chapter: in 1968 the FBI's COINTELPRO program wrote of preventing the rise of a "messiah" who could unite Black activists. Godfrey then turns to Africa, setting the ease of crossing borders in Europe against the trouble Africans face moving between neighboring countries.
That comparison is where much of the conversation sits. More than 160 comments came in within those first hours, on a channel whose shorts usually collect a few. Many viewers repeat calls for unity, one recalls a grandparent insisting the family's roots were in America, and at least one pushes back on the European travel point.
Godfrey is staying on the channel. A second clip from the same interview, about Black comedians not sticking together, followed a day later.
