Abdul El-Sayed calls out Vance and Trump shortly before winning Michigan race
Donald Trump can stop struggling with his name, Abdul El-Sayed tells supporters: "So after JD swears me in in January, you can just go on and call me Senator."
Guardian News's brief speech clip, posted today, has drawn about 38,000 views in its first few hours. The Guardian reports that El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate election, becoming the country's first Muslim senator.
At the podium, backed by US and Michigan flags, El-Sayed begins by addressing JD Vance as "habibi" and anticipating the vice-president administering his oath. "Wolverine one, Buckeye zero," he says, borrowing the language of Michigan and Ohio's sporting rivalry.
Then the teasing gives way to a political pledge. El-Sayed tells Super PACs and special interests that his campaign is coming for their system of politics. He singles out the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC, mockingly thanking it for the opportunity to prevail despite what he describes as heavy spending against him.
His closing line makes the campaign's argument explicit: "Tonight, Michigan, we beat a machine."
