Olivia Dean's 'I've Seen It' and the Bill Withers hit a publisher hears in it

Good Morning America's short report on the copyright claim has a comment section split between 'Blurred Lines' memories and listeners who say they simply don't hear it.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 63,938 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (3,974).

A publisher behind "Just the Two of Us" says Olivia Dean's song "I've Seen It" is too close to the old Bill Withers hit, and Good Morning America's brief report on the claim has gone much further than the show's quick clips usually do. It reached about 44,000 views in twelve hours. A new short there typically ends its whole first day near 4,000.

The two songs come from very different moments. Dean is the London singer the report calls a Grammy winner, and her debut album, Messy, was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. "Just the Two of Us" is a soft-soul standard released under saxophonist Grover Washington Jr.'s name, with Withers singing, and it won the Grammy for Best R&B Song. The report is short. It sets out the publisher's position and leaves the musical comparison to the listener.

Listeners have taken it up. The clip drew 140 comments in half a day, on a channel where shorts usually collect about one in a day. The most liked one recalls the "Blurred Lines" case. Many others say they can't hear the resemblance, and one points out that KT Tunstall's "Suddenly I See" has a similar feel. A self-described Withers lover reminds everyone that music only has so many chords. A few viewers note that the record belongs to Grover Washington Jr., and one admits knowing exactly who Withers is and nothing about Dean.

GMA posted the same day about Missouri's upset of Florida and a new rule on what airlines owe for delays. Neither has come close.
