Budget cuts, inflation and Jim Chalmers's December savings hunt on Sunrise

The Treasurer's plan to trim spending in the mid-year update drew far more viewers than anything else the breakfast show posted that day, a Nintendo 64 fortune included.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 40,346 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (1,964).

Where will the government find its savings? Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the answer comes in December, when the mid-year budget update arrives. Economists, meanwhile, are pressing Labor to spend less while inflation keeps squeezing household budgets. That is the ground Sunrise covered in "Budget cuts debated as inflation pressures mount," and the segment passed 16,000 views in its first seven hours. A regular-length video on the channel usually ends its whole first day below 2,000.

The December document is the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, known in Canberra as MYEFO. It updates the budget's forecasts and is often where a government signals where it will tighten. Chalmers has handled those books since Labor won government in 2022.

For Sunrise, this is the second money story in a few days to pull well ahead. As we reported here, Chris Minns' call on spending and mortgage pain lifted another segment. Viewers of the morning show seem to keep stopping on one question: who ends up paying.

The contrast with the rest of the same day's uploads is sharp. Sunrise also posted an Adelaide man's Nintendo 64 collection, said to be worth nearly $1 million, and a Victorian egg farmer whose honesty box was robbed. It added a look at Carrie returning as an eight-episode series from Mike Flanagan. The budget clip has nearly four times the views of the busiest of them, the egg farm in Westburn. The Stephen King remake trails the field.
