Tropical Depression Nine, and Haley Meier on the season's likely first hurricane
FOX Weather spent Tuesday following a Gulf disturbance from Bryan Norcross's rising odds to a numbered storm, and the briefing that confirmed it drew the biggest crowd.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 169,453 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (9,110).
Tropical Depression Nine Forms, Set To Intensify Into Dangerous Hurricane Making U.S. Landfall
"Tropical Depression Nine Forms, Set To Intensify Into Dangerous Hurricane Making U.S. Landfall" is FOX Weather's briefing on the moment a Gulf disturbance became a numbered storm. Meteorologist Haley Meier walks through what to expect from a system the description calls likely to become the basin's first hurricane of the season. In October, that phrase carries weight: the Atlantic got through all of September without one, as we reported here.
The channel tracked the storm through Tuesday almost step by step. Bryan Norcross's exclusive analysis of Invest 92L was one of the day's big starts. His next update gave the system a 90 percent chance of developing, and a short soon after said the odds had reached 100 percent. Each of these drew far more than a usual first day.
Meier's report, posted once the depression had formed, outran them all. It reached about 77,000 views in its first seven hours, while a new video here usually ends its whole first day near 9,000. A second upload on the same news did far less. That one names the expected hurricane Isaias and puts landfall on the Gulf Coast late Friday into Saturday.
The name itself caught one viewer out, who thought Meier was mispronouncing Isaiah until seeing it spelled. A Fort Myers commenter recalls Ian and suggests getting ready early. Others hope the season's quiet streak holds. A few viewers in East Texas and Tennessee, with no hurricane worries of their own, are asking the forecast to send some of that rain their way.

Atlantic hurricane name lists are reused in a rotation. Every how many years does a list come back?
The World Meteorological Organization keeps six lists for the Atlantic and uses them in turn, so each one returns every six years unless a name is retired.
