Is 'Invest' a name? Bryan Norcross tracks 92L in the Gulf for FOX Weather

His briefing on the first system worth watching after a hurricane-free September passed 235,000 views in about ten hours, on a channel where a new video usually ends its first day near 10,000.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 408,272 views a day, 39 times a normal first day on this channel (10,413).

Several people under FOX Weather's newest Gulf briefing want to know whether Invest is a man's name or a woman's. It is neither. "Invest" is forecasters' shorthand for an area under investigation, a patch of disturbed weather that gets a number so the computer models can start tracking it long before it earns a real name. Others ask, half joking, whether the list of human names has run out. It has not. The system simply has not developed yet.

It might. In "Tracking The Development Of Invest 92L Churning In The Gulf," hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross walks through a system that, according to the description, has a 60% chance of developing within two days. Two days earlier, as we reported here, the story was a September without a single hurricane and the question of whether October would change that. Now there is something on the map, and the audience showed up for it.

Norcross is a familiar voice to hurricane watchers. In 1992 he stayed on the air through the night as Hurricane Andrew tore across South Florida, and that broadcast made his name. His follow-up the same day, a wider look at threats in both the Atlantic and the eastern Pacific, also opened far above the channel's usual pace. An interview with National Hurricane Center deputy director Jamie Rhome about 92L did well too, though less strongly.

The comments also bring a little weather from home. A viewer in North-Central Texas writes that the cool, dry northern wind Norcross described had already arrived and is a relief after a long, hot summer. Another sums up the mood of the thread in a few words: this is the one to watch.
