Russia plague outbreak: Thomas Moore explains the forms of the disease for Sky News
A second report on the same Russian case, from Ivor Bennett, also ran well ahead of the channel's usual first day, and the comments under the explainer keep returning to 2020.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 392,509 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (23,546).
Russia plague outbreak: what you need to know
What is pneumonic plague, and why does it matter which form it is? That is the question behind "Russia plague outbreak: what you need to know," a short explainer that passed 180,000 views in its first eight hours. A new Sky News upload usually ends its whole first day below 25,000.
The description sets out the news plainly: a laboratory worker in Russia has died, and thousands of people are in quarantine. It cites the World Health Organization's warning that the pneumonic form of plague is especially contagious and can trigger severe epidemics. Thomas Moore, the channel's science correspondent, walks through the different varieties of the disease.
The channel covered the case twice. Ivor Bennett's report, "Russian 'plague': How worried should we be?", drew about half as many viewers as Moore's explainer and still ran far ahead of the norm. His description adds a note of caution: the researcher worked at an anti-plague institute and died of what officials called pneumonia of unknown origin, and Russian authorities have not confirmed her exact cause of death.
In the comments, the pandemic years come up again and again: lockdowns, empty supermarket shelves, the feeling of having heard all this before. One much-liked comment says the video spends its running time alarming people only to conclude that there is little cause for worry. Others ask why the worker was not isolated as soon as she was exposed.
The same Monday, Donald Trump's remark that US bombers left RAF Fairford over a "specific threat" gave the channel a third upload that ran well past its usual start.
