Arrested at LAX: FOX 11 on a woman accused of spying for China
Federal prosecutors say the case reaches from Los Angeles to Seattle, where they allege the son of Taiwan's president was watched last year.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 206,766 views a day, 27 times a normal first day on this channel (7,744).
Woman accused of spying for China
A short FOX 11 Los Angeles report titled "Woman accused of spying for China" passed 200,000 views in its first 23 hours. A new short on the channel usually ends its first day under 8,000.
The report is brief and the case is serious. According to the description, federal prosecutors say the woman was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of conducting espionage for China, and they allege she carried out surveillance of the son of Taiwan's president in Seattle last year. The video's tags point to the officials attached to the case, FBI Director Kash Patel and U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, and also mention ICE custody. These are accusations from prosecutors. The report does not describe a trial or a verdict.
The comment section moved even faster than the views. More than 860 comments arrived in less than a day, where a FOX 11 short usually gathers a few dozen. One question comes up again and again: why is her face blurred in the footage when her booking photo is shown anyway? Many others write that they doubt this is an isolated case.
The short ran far ahead of the rest of the channel's day. The newer uploads, on underground electrical vault explosions blamed on aging equipment and heat, officials asking Angelenos to go easy on the air conditioning during a triple-digit heat wave, and a Prop 40 rally, were still in the hundreds or low thousands. Across the whole channel, daily views were running at about half their usual level, so most of the attention went to this one short.
