Six aboard a Hamilton-based air ambulance, and a search called off
CHCH News posted the Coast Guard's decision twice, as a short and as a fuller report, and both drew far more viewers than the station's uploads usually do.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 58,644 views a day, 114 times a normal first day on this channel (514).
U.S. Coast Guard suspends search for missing Hamilton-based air ambulance, passengers
Posted twelve hours earlier, a short clip from CHCH News had already been watched about 41,000 times. A new short on the channel usually reaches a few hundred people in its whole first day.
The subject is close to home for the Hamilton station. A medical evacuation jet operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, a Hamilton-based company, disappeared on Saturday during a flight from Bermuda to Boston. On board the Gulfstream G100 were a patient, a family member and four Canadian crew members. The Federal Aviation Administration reported losing contact with the aircraft that day, and a debris field was found off the coast of Nantucket.
On Sunday the U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search off Massachusetts after covering more than 7,000 km of the Atlantic with planes, helicopters, boats and cutters. The commander of its northeast district, Rear Admiral Matthew Lake, called it a hard decision and offered condolences to the families.
The station carried the story in two forms on the same day: the short, and a longer report under the identical title that drew nearly as many views in a similar span. Those two reports drew far more viewers than anything else on the channel's day, which also covered Hamilton's mayoral race and the return of Parliament to debate Bill C-39.
