A flight-attack short reaches a thousand times CHCH News' usual first day
The Hamilton station's clip of a story from the Gulf traveled far beyond Halton and Niagara, while its own local reports kept their usual audience.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 544,327 views a day, 1055 times a normal first day on this channel (516).
A pilot on a flight carrying Israelis stabbed another and apparently tried to crash, Netanyahu says
A new upload on CHCH News usually reaches a few hundred people on its first day. That is the normal scale for a Hamilton station posting segments from its newscasts: steel layoffs, police briefings, ceremonies in the region.
A short posted on September 30 went much further. Within eleven hours it had passed 360,000 views, on pace for about a thousand times what a CHCH video normally gathers in its first 24 hours. That one clip roughly doubled the whole channel's usual daily views.
The story it carries comes from far outside the station's coverage area. Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that a pilot on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to Israel stabbed the other pilot and then apparently tried to crash the jetliner, which had around 170 people on board. Passengers and crew subdued the attacker, and the plane landed safely in Saudi Arabia. The video was made for the Shorts feed and tagged for it. Perhaps that is how it reached so many people who have never watched a Hamilton newscast.
The station's other uploads on October 1 stayed close to home. Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to go after Cleveland-Cliffs over the Stelco layoffs, and a Stelco mechanic described how unexpected the news was. The station also covered the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, from ceremonies across Canada to the head of the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund on what people can do all year. Most of those reports drew a few hundred views, and the Edmonton ceremony piece passed a thousand.
