One damaged stairway in Laguna Beach: CBS LA's rockslide clip finds nineteen times its usual start

A short morning report on a geologist checking the steps down to Agate State Beach moved far faster than the station's evening coverage of the FlyDubai emergency.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 48,137 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (2,560).

A staircase drew the crowd. After a rockslide on Tuesday, Laguna Beach city crews and a geologist went down to the stairway that leads to Agate State Beach to work out how much damage the falling rock had done. CBS LA's short report from the KCAL News morning show had passed 27,000 views nine hours after it went up. A typical new upload on the channel gathers about 2,500 in its whole first day.

The clip is the clearest sign of an unusually busy stretch. As we reported here, the channel spent the end of September on Hurricane Polo and what came after it. Its daily views are now more than double their normal level. The station's other uploads from the same days stayed in the hundreds or low thousands, and that includes the evening report on the FlyDubai flight that made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

The comments are as much about geography as geology. Some longtime locals say they had never heard of Agate State Beach, and one viewer points out that most people know it as the Agate Street beach access. Others question how the steps were built in the first place, ask why an engineer is needed to judge what the waves are doing, or argue over homes built close to the water. And one viewer is simply pleased that a rockslide might mean more agates.

Among the Los Angeles stations closest to it in size, FOX 11 is also running well above its usual pace, while CBS New York is quieter than normal.
