Screwworm pest detected in Arizona for first time in decades | FOX 10 Phoenix
FOX 10 Phoenix's Megan Spector finds the response to Arizona's screwworm detection already underway far from the confirmed case. At Roper Nation in Wickenburg, owner Kyle Chrisman describes fly-control treatments, traps and hands-on checks of cattle for wounds.
The ranch has shown no signs of the pest. But the discovery in a Cochise County dog, confirmed by state and federal officials, has livestock owners paying closer attention across Arizona, the station reports.
The danger begins with an open wound. New World screwworm flies lay eggs there, and the larvae feed on living tissue, potentially killing an animal without treatment. The report describes the detection as Arizona's first in decades, following the pest's eradication from the United States in the 1960s.
State veterinarian Dr. Ryan Wolker explains that animals leaving infested zones require movement permits and examination by a livestock inspector or veterinarian, with preventative treatment potentially required.
The short report drew roughly 110,000 views in its first day, far beyond the station's usual start for Shorts.
Chrisman's precautions extend beyond medication and fly bags. Roper Nation regularly brings in cattle for competitions, giving staff repeated opportunities to inspect the steers. Daily feeding provides another check: the people handling those chores also look for wounds that need closer examination.
