Finlay Christie questions the class system of "lost potential"
His stand-up routine about privileged people's obituaries is gathering fresh views, while another stage clip passes a million.
Why this story? The video is running at 29,580 views a day, 6.1 times its usual pace (4,852).
When rich people die #standupcomedy
Finlay Christie would prefer his eventual Instagram tribute to say he died in the early hours of the morning. The difficulty, he explains, is that a comedian's sleeping schedule could make that a rather misleading description.
That self-directed turn comes after a sharper observation in "When rich people die #standupcomedy": reports about privileged university students dwell on their lost potential, as though their prospects were what made their deaths sad. Christie imagines how differently an ordinary person's obituary might read before considering his own.
Posted in July, the clip added about 30,000 views in a day, roughly six times its usual daily pace. This is an older stage routine drawing renewed attention, rather than another installment in the documentary parodies he has been posting in October.
Viewers extend the joke to the stock phrases used in tributes, while others pick up on the late-sleeping comedian's problem: nobody who knows their habits would find an afternoon departure surprising.
Christie's stand-up has another marker today, too: his September upload "Too woke to end a hookup #standupcomedy" has passed a million views.
