Jimmy Carr's Guy Fawkes explanation takes a detour through pirates

An audience question becomes a routine about history softening dangerous reputations, posted just in time for Bonfire Night.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 953,489 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (50,286).

"We have a fireworks display to celebrate terrorism," Jimmy Carr tells an audience member asking him to explain Guy Fawkes Night. It is a deliberately provocative answer, not the history-lesson version: the tradition marks the failure of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament.

Carr's interest is in what happens to a frightening reputation once enough time passes. His exhibit is the pirate, once the scourge of the seas, now a perfectly ordinary children's party theme. From there, he imagines a similarly absurd future for Al-Qaeda. A request for an explanation has become a joke about the strange things people eventually turn into fancy dress.

Posted on Bonfire Night itself, the Short reached nearly 480,000 views in eight hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for that format. The comments are unusually busy too, with viewers discussing the pirate comparison, the holiday's origins and Carr's smile as he reaches the end of the bit.

It is not his only fast-starting upload: separate Shorts about Donald Trump and Formula One are also drawing much larger audiences than usual. But the fireworks theme extends beyond this stand-up clip. Carr's channel also posted "Sean Lock's Bonfire Night Routine | 8 Out of 10 Cats", featuring Lock, Jon Richardson and the panel on neighbourhood effigies and firework displays.

  • Well technically the celebration is because they stopped him and executed him.
