Sean Patrick Thomas watches Julia Stiles take on her Juilliard audition again

Etalk's split-screen Short sets her 'Dancing with the Stars' routine with Ezra Sosa against the 2001 movie scene it honors.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 123,814 views a day, 33 times a normal first day on this channel (3,751).

Twenty-five years after Sara Johnson danced for a place at Juilliard, Julia Stiles has danced that audition again, this time on the Dancing with the Stars ballroom floor with her partner Ezra Sosa. Etalk's description says the routine was a tribute to the famous scene from Save the Last Dance, and that her co-star Sean Patrick Thomas was in the crowd cheering her on.

The Short is only seconds long and has no dialogue, just music. Its appeal is the split screen: the live routine runs on one half, the 2001 film on the other, so the ballet-meets-hip-hop choreography can be checked move by move, right down to the drop to the floor. The footage comes from the show and from Paramount Pictures, and Etalk's part is the side-by-side edit.

Thomas's presence carries extra meaning. In the film he plays Derek, the Chicago student who brings Sara into hip-hop and helps her prepare for the audition that the scene builds toward. In the movie, he is the one in her corner when she finally dances for the panel.

The clip drew about 88,000 views in its first 13 hours. A usual Etalk Short does not reach 4,000 in a full day. The comment section is small but much livelier than usual. Viewers point to the smooth heel-toe footwork and say the split screen is the reason they watched. One also notices that the routine does not use the song from the movie.

It was not the channel's only quick riser. A Short of Ella Langley, speaking on Instagram Live about Riley Green's comment on The Voice that seemed to take credit for her career, also moved far ahead of Etalk's usual pace, though it reached only about half the audience of the dance.
