Nancy and Lee Carter come home to Walford with a surrogacy twist

The returning siblings arrive with Nancy carrying a baby for her brother, and a question hanging over what happened between Lee and Jess.

A usual day on the official EastEnders channel brings in something like 140,000 views. Lately it has been running comfortably above that, and the reason has a familiar surname: the Carters.

"Nancy & Lee Carter RETURN!" passed 50,000 views in its first day and is the busiest of nine uploads this week. Its description promises a "complicated situation", and a companion Short spells it out: Nancy is pregnant, as a surrogate for her brother. Maddy Hill and Danny-Boy Hatchard first played the siblings when Mick and Linda's family arrived at the Queen Vic in 2014, so for longtime viewers this is a homecoming with a twist attached.

The comments under the return are mostly about that twist. One of the most discussed questions is a simple "aren't they brother and sister?", which drew a long run of replies, while other viewers patiently explain how surrogacy works and why it is not what the jokes suggest. Others are busy with Nancy's outfit, and several want to know when Jess will turn up on the Square.

Jess is the thread the channel keeps pulling. A day-old clip, "What Is Lee Carter Hiding?", has Linda determined to find out what really happened between Lee and his wife, and it is already gathering views nearly as fast as the return itself. Ian Beale, struggling with being back home, is having a lively first day too.

Earlier in the week belonged to Nicola Mitchell, blackmailed by her brother-in-law over her bar. Among the TV channels around its size, Food Club had the biggest week and Big Brother a notably quiet one, while EastEnders sat in the middle of the pack, and Emmerdale, the other soap in the group, gained a little more.
