3 Pumpkin Recipes from 1776–1839 |Pie, Soup, Cornbread| ASMR
Ron and Justine Rayfield posted nothing new over the past seven days, and their hearth kitchen in Missouri hardly went cold. The video keeping it busy is ten days old: "3 Pumpkin Recipes from 1776–1839 |Pie, Soup, Cornbread| ASMR," which has passed 145,000 views and is drawing more daily viewers than anything else on the channel.
It is a well-timed dish for the start of October. Justine bakes a hearty pumpkin cornbread, cooks a savory soup served in the old style, inside the pumpkin, and makes a pumpkin pie from what the description calls America's first published cookbook, dated 1796. That would be Amelia Simmons' American Cookery, whose "pompkin" puddings baked in a crust are often counted among the earliest printed pumpkin pie recipes in the country.
Right behind it is an older favorite. "What Early 1800s Junk Food Was Like," posted two months ago and now near 400,000 views, goes looking for the ancestors of donuts, onion rings and fries, with fife music by Peter Bringe of the Lewis and Clark Fife & Drum Corps in St. Charles. A summer dinner from 1812, fried chicken with a wild blackberry cobbler, keeps a slower pace of its own.
The channel's daily views are running a little under their usual level, which is about what a break looks like. Around it, other cooking channels of similar size are having loud weeks: Chef Thomson is drawing well over twice his normal daily views, and Cooking with Shereen is running far above hers. Early American's pace is gentler, which suits a channel whose recipes take all afternoon over a fire.
