A fin whale breach, shot by Nicole Schriber, carries Domenic Biagini's pause
The 54-day-old clip from a Gone Whale Watching trip has passed 340,000 views, while nothing new went up on the San Diego channel.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Incredibly rare Fin Whale breach captured in San Diego with Gone Whale Watching!
What do viewers watch on Domenic Biagini's channel when he posts nothing new? A whale coming almost entirely out of the water.
"Incredibly rare Fin Whale breach captured in San Diego with Gone Whale Watching!" went up in mid-August, and it is still the busiest video here, now past 340,000 views. The description gives the credit to someone other than Domenic: naturalist Nicole Schriber filmed the breach from the deck of Gone Whale Watching, the San Diego whale watching business he runs. The title calls it incredibly rare, and with good reason. Fin whales are the second largest animals on Earth, long and slender and built for speed, and they are not known for leaping out of the sea.
Two shorter clips from late September fill out the rest: one with a title that hails the ocean's true apex predator, and one that calls it a tough day to be a common dolphin. Neither title says which animal did the hunting.
Without a new upload, the channel ran at a little over half its usual daily pace and added about 1,000 subscribers. It is an off week across this corner of animal channels, too. Tiridan Vee and BoopTV kept the big view counts, Ajaokesur and Alveus Sanctuary picked up more subscribers, and almost everyone was running below their usual pace. Domenic sat near the middle of the group, both in size and in views gained over the week.
For a photographer whose drone footage has turned up in Blue Planet III, it is a nice twist that the clip doing the heavy lifting came from a crew member's camera.
