Briar, New Orleans and a mother's unsolved murder: Coven Academy's first chapter
The Disney+ channel's sneak peek of its witch boarding-school series has passed two million views, far ahead of anything else the service posted this month.
Why this story? The whole channel is running at 2,445,895 views a day, 11 times a normal day (226,436).
Coven Academy again. A week ago the official Disney Plus channel was running below its usual pace. Now it is drawing roughly ten times its ordinary daily views, and one upload is the obvious place to look.
"Coven Academy | Chapter 1 | Disney+" went up on October 2, the day every episode of the series arrived on the service, and it has passed 2.3 million views. It is a sneak peek of the opening chapter. Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker, arrives at an elite boarding school in New Orleans, finds it full of magic and meets classmates Tegan and Sasha. She also starts to suspect that her mother's unsolved murder is tied to this hidden world. The show follows three teenage witches and their warlock peers, so the clip sets up a mystery as well as a school.
The rest of the channel's October has moved at a far gentler pace. The monthly lineup video, which runs from a Scrubs return to a Family Guy Halloween special, is still short of the clip by a wide margin. The "Huluween" teasers are quieter still. So is a Throwbacks podcast episode in which Sherry Cola and Cierra Ramirez sit down with Kimberly J. Brown and J. Paul Zimmerman, Marnie and Dylan in Halloweentown, to talk spells, set stories and working with Debbie Reynolds.
One school of witches, freshly opened, is carrying the rest of the channel's month.
