From Jaws to The Thing, Dead Meat picks its "All-Timer Classic Horror Jump Scares"
Ten scenes stretch from a 1942 Val Lewton film to John Carpenter's Antarctic shapeshifter, and the comments keep adding the ones that got away.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 210,601 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (17,695).
All-Timer Classic Horror Jump Scares
Dead Meat built a list of the screen's great shocks and went in chronological spirit rather than modern habit: Jaws, Carrie, Friday the 13th, The Ring, Cat People, Alien, Mulholland Drive, House on Haunted Hill, The Exorcist III and The Thing, each with its own chapter, the whole tour in under thirteen minutes.
Fifteen hours after it went up, it was close to 170,000 views. A regular video on James A. Janisse's channel usually ends its whole first day under 20,000. The comments moved fast too, nearly three times a usual first day's total before the day was even over.
Some picks are history lessons. Cat People's moment on a dark street gave horror a name for the fake-out scare, the "Lewton bus," after its producer Val Lewton. Mulholland Drive's slot belongs to David Lynch's diner scene, where Bonnie Aarons appears behind Winkie's.
The comment section reads like a second list. The Exorcist III hallway gets the most love, with one viewer pointing out how it fools you before it strikes. Others admit the Alien scare still works even when they see it coming, and nominate scares that did not make it: the lawnmower in Sinister, the raptor in Jurassic Park, Jack Torrance and his axe in The Shining.
It was a busy start to October on the channel. A Fortnitemares video from the day before is also running far ahead of the usual pace, and a short teasing a classic scare that "wasn't originally in the movie" went up beside the list.

I'll always love the lawnmower scare in Sinister. I think I jumped about 10 feet when I first saw it.
