Hegseth's 'State of the Force' at Quantico opens at fifteen times C-SPAN's usual pace
The defense secretary's speech, in which he says one in five generals and admirals are gone, has drawn a comment section full of arguments about caution and command.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 155,037 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (10,121).
Hegseth: "The ideological clowns are out"
Pete Hegseth went to Quantico, Virginia, on Wednesday to deliver what he called a "State of the Force" address. C-SPAN's clip of it passed 64,000 views in its first seven hours, a pace of roughly fifteen times the channel's usual first day.
The speech is a progress report on the defense secretary's campaign against what he calls "woke" policies and personnel. He says the department has eliminated one in five generals and admirals since the start of the second Trump administration. He also told commanders that the "poisonous culture of risk aversion" was over and that training, readiness, discipline and lethality should be their only focus. The line that gave the clip its title comes from a rhyming list of people he says no longer belong, and it includes a slur for transgender people. He closed the passage with "Diversity is not our strength. Unity is our strength."
Hegseth, a former Fox News host and Army National Guard veteran, has made this kind of talk the signature of his time at the Pentagon. Under the video, the most discussed reply pushes back on the risk-aversion line and argues that caution is what keeps soldiers and civilians alive. Others question his record on merit-based promotion. Several compare the giant-flag backdrop to the opening of the film Patton.
The same day, C-SPAN's Washington Today roundup put the speech alongside the last U.S. troops leaving Iraq. Elissa Slotkin's midterm warning, as we reported here, is drawing a crowd of its own from that same Wednesday.
