Elissa Slotkin's Hungary lesson for the midterms draws C-SPAN's crowd
Speaking at the Carnegie Endowment, the Michigan senator asked Americans to treat any sudden, unfamiliar security threat before Election Day as a warning sign, and her clip moved far faster than the president's own remarks posted the same day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 203,926 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (10,121).
Slotkin warns Trump could "make up a threat" ahead of midterms
Sen. Elissa Slotkin, the Michigan Democrat, went to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington on Wednesday with a warning about the weeks before the midterm elections. Six hours after C-SPAN posted the clip, it had passed 80,000 views. That pace puts it on course for roughly twenty times what a new upload on the channel usually gathers in its first day.
As C-SPAN's description lays it out, Slotkin described what she called the authoritarian playbook. A leader at risk of losing either invents a threat that only he can protect people from, or uses federal law enforcement or the military to take hold of ballots or voting machines. She said President Trump could try the first.
Her example came from Hungary. A week before the country's April elections, explosives were found near a gas pipeline that supplies it, and then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán suggested Ukraine was responsible. Slotkin said Hungarians recognized it as a ruse. Her advice to Americans was specific: if a new threat appears in the 34 days before the vote, and it somehow calls for federal forces rather than local police, treat it as an alarm.
Slotkin knows the security world from the inside. Before Congress, she was a CIA analyst and a Pentagon official, and that background shapes how she talks about threats.
Most of the comments under the clip are calls to vote, and many of them urge people to vote early. One of the most liked points out that the United States held its elections through both world wars, Korea and Vietnam.
The senator's clip easily outpaced the channel's other videos from the same day. Trump's remarks on a taxpayer-funded ad and his comments on the Flydubai flight each stayed below 20,000 views.
