A septum piercing, a Nigerian line-up and Specs Gonzalez's Chosen One on Channel 4.0

A short from a guessing game about who is and is not a lesbian passed 1.4 million views and turned its comment section into a debate about what a piercing really says.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Channel 4.0, the broadcaster's home for shows built around UK creators, usually draws a little over half a million views a day. Right now it is pulling in roughly three times that, and over seven days it added more than six million views, more than any channel of its size in the TV and streaming group. NBC and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are having busy weeks too, while FOX is running quieter than usual.

Most of the lift comes from one short, "The piercings and tattoos convinced them 🤔." It comes from a game where players have to work out whether someone is a lesbian, and one guesser leans on a tattoo and a septum ring as evidence. Viewers have plenty to say about that. Some say piercings belong to everyone and prove nothing, others answer that it is a guessing game and the players can only go on what they see, and a few add that the septum ring has long histories well outside queer culture, from goth scenes to South Asian jewelry traditions.

The longer shows are smaller but more distinctive. "Find The Nigerian" puts Dami Hope, of Love Island fame, and Victor Kunda in front of a twelve-person line-up, with Pidgin, green passports and favorite soups as the clues. And "20 Streamers vs Specs Gonzalez" has the channel's regulars, Harry Pinero, Nella Rose and Darkest Man, sitting with Specs to cut twenty hopefuls down to one, a format the description sells on gifted-sub reactions and questionable thumbnail poses.

The week also brought 10,000 new subscribers, and an eight-day-old short asking about a "Naughty tongue piercing!?" is still climbing behind the leader. Piercings, it seems, are this channel's subject of the moment.

  • As someone who had a septum. It’s a cool look. Don’t label someone based off a tattoo or piercing
