Woody and Buzz's twentieth-anniversary bickering finds its crowd on the Oscars channel
The 2016 bit, in which Pixar's two toys handed out Best Animated Feature, took in about half its views in a single day, and viewers are doing the math on the title.
Why this story? The video is running at 50,767 views a day, 20 times its usual pace (2,554).
Woody and Buzz Celebrate 20 Years of Toy Story at the Oscars!
"Woody and Buzz Celebrate 20 Years of Toy Story at the Oscars!" went up on September 17 and spent its first two weeks at a gentle pace, a couple of thousand views a day. Then it took off. In one day it drew about 50,000 views, roughly half of everything it has.
The clip comes from the 88th Oscars in 2016, when the two toys, animated for the occasion and voiced by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, came out to present Best Animated Feature. That night the award went to Pixar's own Inside Out. The description promises their old squabble on a bigger stage, and the comments describe exactly that: each does an impression of the other, and by most accounts Buzz gets the better of it. Many viewers single out a callback to the first film, Woody's old trick of pointing at an imaginary alien, and several say the animation still looks right.
The most liked comment is a piece of arithmetic. The title counts twenty years, but the ceremony was a decade ago, which puts Toy Story past thirty.
It arrives in a busy stretch for the channel, which is drawing nearly twice its usual daily views. Hosts and comedians have carried most of its recent uploads, from Jimmy Kimmel's joke at Robert Downey Jr.'s expense to Chris Rock on Russell Crowe's devotion to period films, and the Kimmel clip is still the biggest of them. This time, two toys from Andy's room did the work.
