Jaws and Titanic supply the Oscars' movie-music lesson

Tessa Thompson and Michael B. Jordan revisit famous scores, while Jimmy Kimmel finds comedy in two Yorgoses.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

A shark and an ocean liner make useful teaching aids for Tessa Thompson and Michael B. Jordan. The Oscars channel's most-watched new upload uses the scores from Jaws and Titanic to explore how music shapes what we feel at the movies.

The Creed co-stars' presenting segment comes from the 2019 ceremony, with John Williams' menace and James Horner's romantic sweep supplying the contrast. It has drawn roughly 81,000 views, the larger audience of the channel's two releases this week. One commenter even mistook the second selection for music from The Lord of the Rings: recognizing a score can be its own little guessing game.

The other new arrival reaches into Jimmy Kimmel's 2024 hosting turn. "What Happens When Two Yorgoses Get Oscar Nominations??" finds a ready-made pun in Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos and editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis. It's also attracting more daily views right now than the music segment, despite having the smaller total.

Neither is the archive's busiest attraction. That distinction currently belongs to Mickey Mouse searching his pockets for the Animated Short Film nominees until Jennifer Garner points him toward the teleprompter. The 2003 ceremony excerpt has passed five million views. Woody and Buzz's anniversary appearance remains active too, though Mickey is bringing in considerably more daily viewing.

Across the channel, daily views are a little above their usual level, and subscribers grew over the week. Nearly 14 million weekly views put Oscars among the busier nearby television and streaming channels, with Peacock and HBO Max also having substantial weeks. For Oscars, the appeal spans both sides of the ceremony: the music that gives films their emotional weight and the presenters who briefly puncture the grandeur.
