VOCES | ¿Qué harías con casi 44 millones de pesos en efectivo?
A banknote-counting machine was among the items found alongside almost 44 million pesos in cash during a Mexico City raid, according to Mexico's Azteca Noticias.
Presenter Uriel Estrada reports that federal forces arrested a suspected money-laundering network leader in Miguel Hidalgo, a borough in the western part of the capital. The video shows photographs and custody images of the detained man, with his eyes obscured, alongside footage of federal security personnel.
According to the report, the search yielded $920,000 in U.S. currency and nearly 27 million Mexican pesos. Together, the broadcaster puts their value at almost 44 million pesos. Luxury watches, vehicles and documents were also seized.
Estrada says Mexico's Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection links the suspect to extortion and human trafficking. Those allegations remain under investigation.
The segment is titled "VOCES | ¿Qué harías con casi 44 millones de pesos en efectivo?", meaning "What would you do with almost 44 million pesos in cash?" Estrada illustrates the scale by calculating that spending a thousand pesos every day would take more than a century to exhaust the money.
He closes with questions rather than an explanation of the funds: where they came from, where they were going and who else might have been involved.
