Five foreign-exchange trading firms have reported customer harm believed to be connected to GMO Internet Group, Japan's finance and financial services minister, Satsuki Katayama, says in a television news report about a looming ransomware threat.
Japan's All-Nippon News Network (ANN), through TV Asahi's ANNnewsCH channel, reports that Katayama has asked forex businesses to take steps including password changes and warnings to customers. The brief report does not specify the nature or extent of the customer harm.
GMO disclosed late on October 26 that attackers had threatened to publish personal information belonging to users of an affected server. According to the company, the attackers also threatened ransomware attacks that would hold data on customers' computers hostage. Citing a security company's analysis, ANN reports that the attackers appear to be demanding about $1 million.
Ahead of the October 27 noon deadline, GMO urged affected customers to make backups and then turn off their computers. The company says it is examining computers entrusted to it by customers and will not comply with the demand.
At a government briefing, the minister responsible for cybersecurity described the general response to such incidents: authorities receive information from affected organizations and provide support according to the circumstances, while police investigate reported damage as necessary. The bulletin reports the threat and preparations before the deadline, not an outcome afterward.
