Alva Vanderbilt's society comeback anchors American Experience's new uploads

An archival Isabel Allende interview adds the California Gold Rush to a week spanning aristocratic marriage and congressional history.

Money could buy Alva Vanderbilt a Fifth Avenue palace, but it couldn't make her former friends acknowledge her at dinner. American Experience | PBS turns that social freeze into the opening of its most watched new upload, "She played chess, not checkers with her daughter's future".

The short documentary follows Alva's response to being ostracized after her divorce: arranging a match between her daughter Consuelo and the Duke of Marlborough. Historical photographs and newspaper clippings tell a story of wealth exchanged for aristocratic prestige. Bringing the duke to Newport put Alva back at the center of society's attention. The clip has collected roughly 12,000 views.

Four uploads made for a particularly wide-ranging week. "How the 1994 "Republican Revolution" happened" revisits Newt Gingrich's strategy of making the midterms a referendum on Bill Clinton. Another upload recounts Barry Rosen's captivity during the Iran hostage crisis.

The newest longer offering gives Isabel Allende room to explore the research behind Daughter of Fortune. Recorded with filmmaker Randall MacLowry in 2005, the archival interview looks beyond prospectors to Chilean, Mexican and Chinese miners, women's experiences and the making of San Francisco. It had reached about 2,100 views in its opening hours.

Across the channel, the Annie Oakley documentary we covered here remains the busiest individual video, comfortably beyond the new uploads in daily views. Subscribers continued to increase, though the week's growth was gentler than the past month's average, and daily viewing is a little below its usual level. Among the selected documentary peers, The Atlantic is having a particularly busy spell; American Experience nevertheless collected the second-largest weekly view gain in that group, with its archive supplying much more viewing than the new releases alone.
